Chapter 29.
FATHER OâMALLEY SINGS in that voice of his. Melodious. Sanctimonious. Itâs a song, and it ainât a sweet one. Through his weeping and mumbling, itâs dark and itâs sad and itâs sick and itâs confessional, and I can barely listen as he sings it long and he sings it somber and he sings it till he falls silent.
I thank Brahma when it ends.
Throughout, Nikunj just stands there with arms crossed, leaning against the wall, frown on his face, nostrils flaring with each breath. Itâs just the three of us. I wouldnât let Brooklyn sit in, and Clipper couldnât stand it in the end. âYou ruined my life,â he mumbled after glaring at the good father for an eon. Then Clipper just up and slouched out. Heâs drowning in a bottle somewhere, no doubt.
Me and Nikunj watched him go, his head down. We said nothing. What the hell was there to say?
âYouâre going to kill me, arenât you?â Father OâMalley gasps, eyes glancing for the door.
âNo oneâs coming through it.â I eye that very same door.
âOh, lord,â he trembles his hands together in fumbled prayer, eases himself to his knees. âOur Father, who artââ
I slap his hands apart. âWhereâs the man in the iron mask?â
âThe man in the mask,â tears eke from the corners of his eyes, âheâs... I donât know where he is. Please.â
Nikunj cracks his knuckles, one by one.
Father OâMalley stops short, looks up, begging. Itâs settling in now, soft and heavy, a lead shroud falling on all sides, sealing at the corners, weighing him down. âMaybe we canââ
âNo.â
âButââ
âNo.â
âPleaseââ
I shake my head, mouth the word one last time. It falls silent but thuds like a boulder.
Father OâMalleyâs upright posture falters like a wilting daisy, his head drooping onto his chest as he knurls down into himself, his hands grasping, his fingers digging into his skull. âMake it quick.â
âThatâll depend on you,â I say.
Father OâMalley pulls at his lips; heâs staring off now.
âYou must know something.â I remove a set of torque pliers from inside my coat and place them on OâMalleyâs desk. âIâm offering you a clean route.â Torture. âDonât make me get creative.â I find it as unpalatable as Father OâMalley, and if it comes to it, I donât know if I can stomach it. âGive me a name.â But weâre capable of so much more than we know. âGive me a line. Give me a name. Give me something I can use to find this man.â I ratchet open the torque pliers, and they click as they yawn wide like the beak of some desolate beast.
Eyes riveted to the torque pliers, Father OâMalley swallows, smooths out his hair, licks his lips. âThe man in the mask is a ... a fixer.â Heâs accepting it now. âHe fixes things for the church.â
âBroken things like you?â I ask.
âYes. And ... other things. Bad things. Problem things.â
âWhoâs he work directly for?â I ask.
âI ... I donât know.â
âWho called him in on you?â
âI donât know,â he closes his eyes, tearing up, shakes his head, ânot for sure.
